Stupidity on MacRumors and in the federal government, as usual.
The only reason OVI / DUI / DWI checkpoints are legal under the US Constitution and your local state Constitution is because the locations are made public in advance. Your local newspaper (or some other paper of general circulation) will publish the locations a day or so in advance of the police operating the checkpoint. This is what allows the police to pull your car over and detain you despite lacking any probable cause to believe you are drunk. Without that notice (where you are considered to have consented to the stop by driving through the checkpoint), any stopping of your vehicle without probable cause is unlawful and renders any evidence located (such as your breath test or SFSTs) inadmissible in court.
Removing this app is tantamount to the federal government telling private citizens they don't have a right to know where checkpoints are located -- and that knowledge is the only reason checkpoints are legal.
The Senators are stepping in it on this one, and probably not a one of them has anyone on their staff who has ever spent time in a municipal court dealing with a drunk driving case.

Why do I feel like you are one of the people who purposely try to slow people down because you need to be on some higher moral ground and make sure the entire world does the speed you believe is safe?Higher moral ground? Read your posts ... pot meet kettle.
Because I am going to. I'm a completely safe driver (even when doing 90 or above) until I run into some dunderhead who has to enforce the speed limit themselves. Had that woman just moved like everyone else did, I would have never had to cut her off in order to punish her. And yes I did have to punish her, because she needed to be taught her dang place on the road.I believe it is you who believes he holds some higher moral ground here. I believe that it is you who feels the need to punish someone. Everything you say about her and what she did to you is exactly what you're doing to her. Honking, flashing your lights, tailgating, and break checking her is punishing her for traveling at a safe speed. Just because you're a child in a car that is too much for you to handle and too expensive for a punk 16 year old doesn't make you a ****ing law. You're going 90, I am glad she didn't move and glad that it has you so worked up that you came here to cry about it.
EDIT: @adk - yes I am 16, however in this situation my mother was in the car and actually encouraged me to cut the idiot off. So it's not just an age based thing.
-DonParenting, no license required ... clearly. I think I'll keep an eye on the news in your area so I can see just when and how you kill yourself or worse yet (and much worse yet) someone else because of your awesome driving skills.
I personally love how I get the bad rap, when the woman was the one going under the speed limit and attempted to breakcheck me first. She got what was coming to her. Had she just had some common courtesy and moved over, nothing would of happened. Instead she decided that she had to play traffic cop.
You people are all laughable.
-DonYou're 16 going 20 mph over the speed limit. You are not a COMPLETELY safe driver, not even a little. Your mother supposedly allowing you to do this is equally disgusting. The driver was likely not trying to enforce the speed limit. Just because you're speeding and people are getting out of your way, doesn't mean that her unwillingness to let you by is her way of enforcing anything. Newsflash, just because you're doing 90 in a 70 doesn't mean people HAVE to move. Most move because they fear for their own lives. I also call BS, I bet she wasn't doing 65. You're no more a safe driver than you are honest. Your first post you already concluded that you would have lied about some animal in the road. Doing 90, chances are you wouldn't even see the animal. You are laughable at best. It is not common courtsey to move out of the way of some guy honking, tailgating, and flashing his brights at you. You speak of courtsey and yet you have none.
When someone like you comes knocking on my ass you get to stay behind me while I chill on cruise control. Keep in mind, all those people who moved are witnesses. Should something have happened, at least one would be there. The so-called law and your so-called awesome family member who can supposedly get you out of all of this are powerless when it comes to you touching metal. Rear-ending someone may be 100% the fault of the person behind you until a witness comes forward and explains how the accident came to be. Animal or not, you're screwed.

I think its very telling that Jobs closed the Showtime event by saying:
"Apple is in your den, living room, car, pocket. I think you see where we are going with this."
Is he saying that Apple's plan is to be everywhere?
Probably, and a cell phone certainly completes that plan.

No one refers to McDonald's as Burger Store. Their brand name is so strong that people actually say McDonald's because that logo and name is pretty much seared into everyone head.
i do .. it's kinda catchy .. my 2yo calls it "old mcdonalds" because of .. you know .. that song
language is use .. didn't we learn anything from Wittgenstein?

Remember, we have high taxes (~20% VAT etc) but better public services in general.
If you calculate where personal income goes, the US has effectively similar tax rates to most of Europe, just more of it goes to private business instead of the government. The structure of the legal system supports funneling our money upward in a manner that is functionally indistinguishable from privatized taxation. Lamentably, the ROI on privatization, AFAICT, is far lower in the private sector (compare the benefit/overhead ratio of Medicare to most private insurance companies). Personally, I would take government services over more costly, lower quality private services every freaking time.
The dynamic that the US faces right now is similar to north Africa and the Arabian peninsula: as those in power work out more ways to benefit from the misery of the essentially powerless, more and more people are acquiring less and less to lose. The tipping point will be when the sheer volume of despair overtops the levee of hope. The Prince describes these cycles of society. What follows may well be a slight revision of its antecedent, unless we can somehow refer to history to discover some way to break the cycle.

I hope to see the backlit keyboard back also. It should be a standard MacBook feature.
I think I'll be satisfied with gaming on an Air thanks to OnLive. In fact, it's the perfect machine for it. Just plug in a wireless 360 controller (and optionally an external monitor/HDTV) and play.

This is a great start for Apple and should help sway studios that are still on the fence. Doesnt mean I'm biting though, only thing that'll get me to seriously think of buying a movie would be nothing less than a 720 x 480 reso. I might get impulsive if there are more offerings. Maybe.
I think Apple should seriously consider offering rentals too. Its dumb not to try it out :)
While I think rentals would probably create a lot of headache for apple, I am in complete agreement with HD movies on iTMS. I have yet to even buy a single song from the itunes store, but you can be assured that as soon as HD movies and TV shows are available, coupled with the iTV device, I will be buying those right away. Offering at least 720p would make me very happy, and I would be a definite repeat customer.

I started doing like this guy (http://www.speedtrapahead.org) a while back when a revenue officer started hiding in a church parking lot near my house. As soon as the "Speed Trap Ahead" sign went up in my yard, what-d-ya-know!...no more sirens! If the people will make this their responsibility, it will no longer be as profitable for them.

and you doing 20 mph over the limit was a good idea?
A rarely if ever a good idea.
2 you lack the experience to even know how to drive that much over the limit.
3 fact that she had to go out of your way quickly tells me you really screwed up. I know if I saw someone flying up on me I might flash my brake lights (not slow down but flash them) to get them to slow down and back off. Force them to see me and people see brake lights they tend to slow down. I have gotten people like you to smoke their tires before. Mind you I was in the left lane. Had a semi truck to my right and I was going threw a pass. They come flying up on me and get on my bumper. I press my brakes just hard enough to cause the lights to come on but my speed stays the same. They smoke their tires and give me some breathing room. Works every time to get people to back off.

Imagine how long the download would be if the movie was high def instead of 640 x 480.
Probably not quite as long as you might think. Less than 3x longer for 720p or 1080i, <6x longer for 1080p.

Depends on if the PC manufacturers are SHIPPING the Core 2 Duo laptops. If Apple announces that the new Merom laptops are available and are ready to ship that day, then it isn't a big deal.
If Apple is being beat to market on hardware, then Apple should go back to PowerPC because they're no different then any other PC manufacturer, with their switch to Intel.
There is a significantly less amount of wiggle room for them, they will now have to answer to shareholders, about why they are taking so long to roll out a product that all the other PC manufacturers are shipping.

IDC seems to assume that anyone who would have walked into a store and bought a Nokia smartphone (with Symbian) will now walk into the store and still buy a Nokia smartphone (with WP7 this time).
"Smartphones" covers a huge range of different phones. iOS and Android cover the higher end, Symbian covered the lower end. In the future, building the hardware for a "smartphone" instead of a dumb phone will become cheaper; as a result, many people not interested in the capabilities of a smartphone at all will buy one by default; that will make the smartphone market grow. That is also what makes Apple's iPhone market share shrink: Apple's sales are growing, the market share among _all_ phones is growing, but because the percentage of smart phones among all phones is growing from say 20% to 90%, the market share among smart phones is going down.
But why would a former Nokia customer buy WP7? IDC assumes this will happen by default; they bought Nokia before, they bought Nokia again. But Nokia doesn't have the same product anymore. If the customer can't get something similar to what they had before, they are free to look _anywhere_. And WP7 can't beat Android on price (because of the license fees fees Nokia has to pay to Microsoft), and WP7 can't beat iOS on quality. I can't see any former Nokia customer deciding that a Nokia WP7 phone will be the best they can get for their money.
Seems believable...all those people that bought Nokia phones obviously did not care that Symbian was outdated. Why will they not buy Nokia with a much modern OS under the hood?
At some point Nokia had the best phones; then they messed it all up. People kept buying Nokia phones in shrinking numbers because they remembered Nokia's good reputation. That reputation is now gone. And there is still a bit of desert ahead of Nokia until they have WP7 phones for sale; that isn't going to help.

I never ONCE claimed you dont have GSM carriers. I claimed (and maintain) that CDMA is crap for consumer choice. and what you pay for calls is irrelevant. they dont charge you more/less because of it being CDMA/GSM/analogue/a tin on a string.

Love the free upgrade to the Magic Trackpad... I already have an $80 mouse (the Logitech MX Revolution) so I don't need a Magic Mouse, but I would love a free Magic Trackpad!
Matthew
I wouldn't consider it as being "free", since I'm sure they put it into the actual price of the iMac.

Been wanting this for a while. I have a windows PC just doing nothing, if I can turn it into an Airport Express like device, can have music going throughout the house.
What's the point? The Airport Express is only $99 bucks, sometimes I've seen them on ebay or Craigslist for half that... The Airport Express uses only 6 watts of power.
What is your PC going to use? 300 watts? You'll spend that much on electricity after 6 months to a year.

Wonder if the top of the line Core i7 Sandy Bridge iMac will be faster than many of the SP Mac Pro configurations.
Well of course it will. Processing speed is only one of the reasons people buy Mac Pros. I'll predict that a SB iMac quad will easily go faster than any one of the current Mac Pros and maybe even faster than the corrent hexacore.

 I just literally finished ordering a new battery and 1gb memory upgrade so my ibook would last a little longer. If they release a tablet (which is what I'm holding on for) I'll cry!
Don't cry - a tablet would be the absolute worst interface for edit digital photos, so there's absolutely no chance that'll be happening at photokina.

Eh....While I make a terrible liberal because I believe gun control isn't a big issue, there IS such a thing as a lost cause, and that people usually get what they deserve.... I also make a terrible conservative in that I don't think a mall cop should be carrying a ****ing firearm, nor should he be going for a killing shot- shoulder/leg at MOST. And anyway, from the sound of it, they weren't even in the store yet- they were still in the process of breaking in. REAL police are hesitant to fire upon a fleeing suspect, why the **** is a mall cop shooting people in the head who are running away without any stolen property? Answer: Because he's not a real police officer and he shouldn't be carrying a ****ing firearm. Sounds like this will be hitting the courtrooms.
*Edit*
They've updated the post since I posted that...The suspects were armed and firing, so I retract the bit about shooting a fleeing suspect. I'm still not comfortable with a mall cop carrying lethal force....there are plenty of less-than-lethal options out there.
