Soccer: No major upsets

Manchester United claimed the English Premier League for the third year running, edging out their nearest rivals Liverpool by 4 points. Chelsea ran both the clubs close for most part of the season before running out of steam towards the end. They finished at third place, 3 points behind Liverpool while Arsenal remained a distant fourth.

Barcelona basked in domestic glory as well, finishing a comfortable 9-point clear of their second placed rivals Real Madrid. Seville and Athelico Madrid finished third and fourth respectively qualifying for the Champions League’s play-offs.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho made his presence felt in Italy when he guided Inter Milan to their fourth consecutive Serie A title. Juventus piped AC Milan to the second spot on goal difference. On the European front however it was a disappointing year for all Italian sides, as none of them managed to progress past the quarter-finals.

Wolfsburg, Bordeaux and FC Porto clinched the German, French and Portuguese leagues respectively.

Soccer: Real go shopping

Soccer: Real go shopping

Stung by the unprecedented success their fierce rivals Barcelona enjoyed in the 2008-09 season, Real Madrid hit back…like only Real Madrid can.

Firstly, they signed up Kaka from AC Milan for 56 million pounds and then 3 days later, lured away Cristiano Ronaldo away from Manchester United for a staggering 80 million pounds.

Real president Florentino Perez fulfilled his chersished dream, one that he had vocally pursued all of last year.

Not content yet, Real Madrid managed to wean away playmaker Xabi Alonso from Liverpool FC as well as Karim Benzema from Olympique Lyonnais, presenting coach Manuel Pellegrini with an array of talent in his bid to topple Barcelona from the perch.

And have they suceeded? Well...this season they are trailing Barcelona in the La Liga points table so far and have also been beaten 1-0 in a ‘Al Classico’ once!

Manchester City provided the English version of Real Madrid type spending.

Boosted financially after Abu Dhabi United Group took over the club, City opened their doors to all and sundry as they tried to reposition themselves as one of England’s Big Four.

Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Kolo Touré, Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tévez and Joleon Lescott were some of the high profile signings by the club currently at sixth in the league table.

Semenya lands in gender trouble

Semenya lands in gender trouble

Mokgadi Caster Semenya (born 7 January 1991) is a South African middle-distance runner and world champion. Semenya won gold in the women`s 800 metres at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics with a time of 1:55.45 in the final.

Following her victory at the 2009 World Championships, questions about Semenya`s gender were raised. Her case became one of the most "public and controversial cases of sex verification in sports".

If nothing else, Caster Semenya has earned the respect of thousands of spectators, showing amazing poise under the intense spotlight which has rightly or wrongly been glaring on her throughout the duration of these World Championships in Berlin.

The newly-crowned 800m world champion has been the subject of increased speculation over her gender after making the headlines when she set a sensational time of 1:56:72 at the African Junior Championships in Mauritius.

In doing so the 18-year-old had set the fastest time worldwide in the 800m this year and subsequently prompted the International Association of Athletics Federation to demand that the South African Athletics Federation carry out testing to ascertain the gender of Semenya.

Since July, Semenya has been caught up in a media whirlwind after claiming gold in the final of the 800m at the World Championships in Berlin. The dealing of the matter has been held in a very public domain leaving the poor athlete under the scrutiny of the world.

While controversies and Maradona go hand in hand, talismanic French striker Thierry Henry is someone who would be least expected to cause an unwanted storm.

But the Barcelona star did a ‘Maradona’ during the second-leg play-of(of or off ?) against Ireland at Paris.

With France minutes away from elimination, Henry handled the ball to keep it inside the playing arena in the build up to William Gallas` decisive extra-time goal, earning them the much-needed goal that saw them through.

Furor erupted as the Irish claimed victimization with some players even going as far as accusing World Cup sponsors Adidas of hatching controversy to oust them.

The government of Ireland requested the French authorities to appeal to FIFA for a re-match, which was duly turned down by the apex soccer body.

Amidst widespread condemnation, FIFA announced that an inquiry would be held against Henry, who if found guilty, could face upto a 2-match ban.

Henry was remorseful.

“Naturally I feel embarrassed at the way that we won and feel extremely sorry for the Irish who definitely deserve to be in South Africa,” he said.

Soccer: Maradona’s Mission Accomplished

Soccer: Maradona’s Mission Accomplished

When Diego Maradona is around, expect the unexpected!

Dazzling with brilliance on one occasion, to being sent back home mid-way after failing a drugs test. With a penchant for grabbing the headlines at World Cups during his playing days for either scoring by hand, or by mouth, Maradona could always be trusted to provide the wisp needed to set off a storm.

So when Maradona was entrusted with the task of guiding a mightily talented, but a floundering Argentine outfit into the World Cup, the world watched with a bated breath as to how one of the most loved as well as most hated (that’s how the opinions were divided) figures would perform as coach.

One of the most successful national football teams in the world, having twice won the FIFA World Cup, in 1978 and 1986, Argentina were staring at the prospect of missing out a spot at the event.

Three successive defeats including a 3-1 submission to Brazil at home, and a 6-1 hammering at Bolivia had left their campaign in tatters. Maradona, so often press’ favorite whipping boy, was subjected to barrage of scathing criticsm, putting the star under immense pressure.

One failure away from the sack, a last grasp victory over Peru offered his team a lifeline, which was duly grasped with both hands as Argentina defeated Uruguay in the last qualifying match to avoid play-ofs and qualify for the World Cup.

Mission accomplished, the bottled up frustration overflowed as Maradona indulged in unsavory outburst directed towards what he later confessed, was the media.

He was banned for 2-months, but no one cared. Critics had been silenced, until June 2010 atleast

Tennis 2009: Wimbledon

Federer laid claim to be the greatest tennis player of all-time as he notched up his 15th Grand Slam title after he beat Andy Roddick in a 30 game, five set marathon. The women’s front too was loaded with the Williams sisters battling it out for supremacy and it was the time for the younger and more aggressive Serena to win the ladies crown.

Tennis 2009: Australian Open/ Crying Federer

The Australian Open started the year 2009 with a Grand Slam to say the least. Two of the world’s best players of the past decade, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer began the festivities with a men’s final that rocked all senses. Rafa won in the end and it was the first time we saw the emotion on FedEx, fans all over the world got a glimpse of a shattered Federer crying after the loss. The sportsmanship of the two athletes could be seen in the presentation ceremony as Nadal hugged Federer and announced to all that he felt extremely bad for Federer.

F1: Brawn GP/ Jenson Button

Brawn GP raced to take the honours and earned respect as they shrugged-off Honda’s ghosts. The results saw them leading both drivers’ as well as team’s standings. Jenson Button ended the year as the numero uno racer and earned himself a lot of respect. Sadly, the same could not be said for Lewis Hamilton, the sensation of 2008.

Ferrari and McLaren faced the wrath of the smaller teams this time around, finishing not at the usual first and second positions, rather tugging along in the middle of the tables.

The tournament started well as Parimarjan Negi stunned a higher rated Vadim Milov of Switzerland but it proved to be the only bright spot of the tournament as a losing streak after saw the Indians follow each other out of the tournament soon after.

Adding another feather to his cap and one more to the list of achievements in the sport of boxing, Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh became India`s first pugilist to clinch a medal at the World Boxing Championships.

The top seed boxer defeated Ukrainian Sergiy Derevyanchenko 12-4 to reach the last four stage but lost to Uzbekistan`s Abbos Atoev in the semis and had to settle for a bronze.

Having won at the mega-event, Vijender became the first Indian to be rated the top-ranked boxer in the world in the middle-weight (75kg) category.

"I am obviously elated at being ranked the highest in the world. It`s a fantastic feeling and would motivate me to do better in future events," he said.

The great F1 race of 2009

The great F1 race of 2009

Formula One entered a previously un-chartered land in the year 2009, a road that saw the emergence of new sharks on the asphalt, a destiny that brought down the hegemony of the Red (Ferrari) and the White (McLaren) behemoths. Not only was the year beset with shocks and surprises ranging from life threatening accidents to off the track scandals, it also saw the ushering in of a new top brass for many teams. There was drama, there was speed, but most importantly, there was a great script that time will unfold as racing buffs wait for a new kind of a racing experience in the coming year.

Tiger’s Hunting Trail

Tiger’s Hunting Trail

Tiger Woods would have never thought that a car accident would cost him so much. What happened with Tiger Woods a few days back can easily be called the shocker of the year in the golfing world!

It all started with a mysterious car accident outside Woods’ Florida mansion on Thanksgiving, an event on which both Tiger and his wife Elin Nordegren decided to remain tight-lipped, to everyone’s surprise. His wife used his golf club to smash a window of his vehicle to get him out of his SUV. Things became more suspicious after Tiger declared on his website (point to be noted here is that he avoided facing the media directly since the crash) a pull-out from the Chevron World Challenge, a tournament that benefits his charity foundation. He ostensibly stated that he wanted to recover from his injuries sustained from the car crash, but the reality was obviously a very different one.

Slowly and steadily, the can of worms opened and secrets began to unfold about the private life of the ace golfer, who found himself amidst one of the biggest sex scandals controversies in international sports, and now, has decided to take an indefinite break from his golfing career.

In what came as a bolt from the blue for everyone, the highest earning sportsman in history, Tiger is alleged to have been involved with 14 different women sexually, apart from his wife. The list of his mistresses includes names like porn stars Holly Sampson and Joslyn James, Rachel Uchitel (a VIP hostess), Jamie Grubbs (a reality TV star) and many more.

A sex addict to the core, it is also known that he signed a prenuptial agreement, according to which, his wife Elin was supposed to get five million dollars to keep from walking away from the marriage and an additional 80 million for staying with him as ‘Mrs. Tiger Woods’ for seven years. However, the money couldn’t hold her back and she, reportedly, has decided to divorce him, deciding to claim half of his earnings of the past five years.

It is not only Woods’ family life that has been disrupted. Financially, Woods may have got the shock of his life as many big brands pulled out their advertisements featuring the mottled golfer from the broadcasts and cable channels in the States. To add to his misery, technology outsourcing and consulting firm Accenture Plc ended its six-year sponsorship arrangement with Woods altogether.

According to media research group Nielsen, the last prime-time commercial starring Woods - a 30-second advert for Gillette - played on November 29. Woods has also lost his own brand of Gatorade sport drink named Tiger Focus, which was launched in March 2008. However, the company claims that the decision has nothing to with the scandal and that they had planned to discontinue with the product several month ago.

Meanwhile, Woods ranking as a celebrity product endorser plunged from 6th to 24th on the Davie Brown Index.

GOLF: The Majors

GOLF: The Majors

The year started with Argentinean Ángel Cabrera adding another Majors trophy to his shelf after he grabbed ‘The Masters’ at the Augusta National Golf Club. His classic 12 under par made him the first Argentine to win either The Masters or the US Open (2007). Cabrera beat American Kenny Perry to claim the USD 7,500,000 prize money.

Later in June, American golfer Lucas Glover went on to claim his first Majors title, The US Open at the Black Course of Bethpage State Park with a 4 under par score of 276. Glover fought under the influence of continuous rains to win the extravagant prize money of USD 7,500,000.

A month later, in July, Stewart Cink from Scotland also went on to clinch the first Majors trophy of his career, that is, the Open Championship. Competing for prize money of USD 8,600,000, Cink defeated 59 year-old Tom Watson after a four-hole playoff, having not held the outright lead during regulation play. Watson, who had the chance to win his sixth Open, could have become the oldest major champion in history during regulation play, but was unable to make par on the final hole to drop into a tie with Cink.

And finally, the last of the Majors championship, the PGA Championship, too went to a new title-holder, South Korean Yang Yong-eun. Yang’s three strokes victory marked the historical moment of the four-time champion Tiger Woods failing to win a Major he had led after 54 holes. Yang also became the first Asian-born player to win a men’s major championship.

India wins Azlan Shah Cup

India wins Azlan Shah Cup

India regained the Azlan Shah hockey title after a 13-year gap, defeating hosts Malaysia 3-1 in the finals of the five-nation tournament. India entered the tournament as favourites against a depleted field. Pakistan, Malaysia, New Zealand and debutant Egypt were the other teams in fray.

India were held to draw 2-2 in the very first match against Egypt, but bounced back beating Malaysia. They beat Pakistan in the semi-final to enter the title clash.

The Indians were champions in 1985, 1991 and 1995, while in 2006 they lost to Argentina in the final. Malaysia had only made to the final of the tournament in 1985 and 2007, and lost to India and Australia on both occasions.

Muniyappa; The Star of 2009

Muniyappa; The Star of 2009

The year 2009 for cannot be claimed to be on of the finest for our Indian golfers. Where on one hand, they clinched three tournaments on the Asian tour circuit; on the other hand, they failed to make a significant mark on the Japan Tour.

Unlike in 2008, Jyoti Randhawa this year in March claimed a title for himself on the Asian tour, that is, Singha Thailand Open, a new addition to the circuit.

In July, Ganganjet Bhullar won the second Asian Tour trophy for India after he won the Indonesian President Invitational. He also won five PGTI Players Championships throughout the year, marking it to be the most successful year of his career so far.

Later in October, Chinnaswamy Muniyappa brought back the Hero Honda Indian Open trophy back home, thus, also winning his first trophy on the Asian tour circuit. The victory also earned the caddie-turned-pro Muniyappa the Asian Tour Rookie of the Year award.

The Bangalore pro with a humble background was the lone Indian in Asian Tour’s annual roll of honour in which Thai star Thongchai Jaidee, winner of an unprecedented third Order of Merit crown, has been voted by his peers as the 2009 Asian Tour Players’ Player of the Year.

The unheralded Muniyappa wrapped up his season in 10th place on the Order of Merit with USD 223,269 through one win and three other top-25s.

Meanwhile Ace Indian golfer, Jeev Milkha Singh, though failed to win any major tournament, finished second at the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup. The defending champion was just two strokes off the pace at tied second after turning in a brilliant five-under 65 in the penultimate round.

The pro also teamed up with Jyoti Randhawa at the prestigious Golf World Cup at the Mission Hills Club and finished tied 14th in the event.

In the past several years, there have been plenty of star athletes at Friendswood High School.

On the football field, Jacob Karam (Texas Tech), Will Ebner (Missouri) and Andre Gautreaux (Rice) lit up opponents and the scoreboard at Henry Winston Stadium.

Alex Anastas (Houston) proved to be a pitcher’s nightmare on the baseball diamond.

Annalisa Hall (Oklahoma signee) has been unstoppable in basketball and soccer. Byron Randle (Sam Houston State signee) also has been a force on the basketball court.

But when determining the best athlete at Friendswood in the last three years, the one who dominated his sport the most, there is no competition. Cole Cragin broke a 10-year-old national swimming record and in the process cemented his status as a future Olympian.

His record-setting season is The Daily News’ No. 5 sports story of the year.

Cragin already was one of the top swimmers in Texas, setting state records in the 100-yard butterfly and backstroke his junior season.

Three years ago, Cragin was the first Friendswood swimmer to win an individual state title. After his junior year, that number was up to four.

But Cragin had higher goals in his final high school season before heading to the University of Texas to be a part of the Longhorn swimming team.

One of those was once again going undefeated in all district or regional races. He accomplished that feat for the third straight season.

Heading into the 2009 state swim meet in February, Cragin said he didn’t just want to win state titles in the 100-yard butterfly and backstroke again — he wanted to break the 48-second barrier in both events.

His state record in the backstroke was 48.63 seconds, giving him reason to be confident.

“I feel pretty good in the water right now,” Cragin said before the meet. “I’ve been training hard enough to do that. I think it’s pretty doable.”

He got off to a nice start in the preliminary heats of the Class 4A championships, posting times of 48.02 seconds in the backstroke and 48.63 seconds in the butterfly. Both marks beat his previous state records.

The next day, Cragin won the state title in the butterfly with a time of 48.46 seconds, again setting a new state record. But that accomplishment almost went unnoticed after what he did in the backstroke.

I happened to be at a Friendswood baseball game when I got the news via text, and I was sure to pass it along to be announced to the crowd — Cragin has broken the national record in the backstroke.

Cragin swam the finals in 46.75 seconds, breaking the 10-year-old mark of 46.82 set by Alex Lim in 1999. The time would have ranked him 14th among all NCAA Division I swimmers this season.

As soon as Cragin touched the wall, he said he knew he had just broken the national mark.

“I didn’t think I’d be able to break the record, so it’s pretty unbelievable,” he said. “I was just in shock.”

The state title gave him six in his high school career. It also earned him the National High School Coaches Association senior boys swimmer of the year honors later in the summer. He was just one of four Texas athletes to be honored by the organization.

Cragin is already off to a hot start at Texas, posting a 48.88 second mark in the 100-backstroke, a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA national championships. He also is racing in the 200-backstroke, as well as several medley relay teams for the Longhorns.

As for the record, Cragin said he hopes it holds up at least as long as the one he broke.

“I guess I will just be watching it for years to come,” Cragin said. “It’s kind of hard to say how long it will hold up right now. I’ll have to take it year by year. But I hope it lasts a while.”

TOP 10 SPORTS STORIES OF 2009:
Championship feeling

Throughout the past year, the local community experienced its share of important, interesting and tragic sports stories. Some of the stories touched us, some informed us and others just entertained us.

Although many of the stories deserve recognition, a select few stood out among the others.

Chosen by the Leader, here is a list of the top 10 stories of 2009.

1 Bell-Jeff girls’ basketball team wins stats, CIF titles Bell-Jeff girls’ basketball team wins stats, CIF titles: In March, Bellarmine-Jefferson High defeated Pinewood, 55-47, in the CIF State Basketball Division V Championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

It was the first state title by any team — in any sport — in city history.

The win gave Bell-Jeff a 34-1 record, which set a new school record. In addition, the team ended the season on a 20-game winning streak.

The Guards, led my senior Shelley Gupilan and under the direction of Coach Bryan Camacho, also won the CIF Southern Section Division V-A championship against Santa Clara, 61-31. It was the program’s first crown in 12 years.

2 Britton is first local to be taken in NFL DraftBritton is first local to be taken in NFL Draft: The former Burroughs High and University of Arizona offensive lineman was the 39th overall pick in April’s 2009 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, as he was selected in the second round.

He became the only local athlete to be drafted by the NFL.

The 6-foot-6, 310-pound tackle signed a four-year contract with Jacksonville in August and has been starting for the team this season.

Britton, a 2005 Burroughs graduate, was named the Leader Male Athlete of the Year the same year he graduated.

3 Nelson advances to state competition in trackNelson advances to state competition in track: After advancing to the state meet in cross-country, Nelson continued his success during the track and field season.

He advanced to the CIF-State Track and Field Championships in the boys’ 3,200 meters, finishing 16th in 9:06.68. He also set the school record in the event (9:04.19).

Nelson, who helped the team to a second-place league finish, is the first Burroughs male athlete to qualify for state competition in both cross-country and track and field.

4 Tubert wins CIF golf championshipTubert wins CIF golf championship: Playing against some of the toughest female high school golfers in the country, Tubert fired a five-under-par 67 last month to capture the championship at the CIF Individual Final and Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. Qualifying at Talega Golf Course in San Clemente.

She advanced to the Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. Tournament at the SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta.

She is the first area golfer to win a Southern Section title. In addition, Tubert is the first female athlete from Burroughs to win an individual championship in any sport.

Tubert is headed to the University of Arkansas.

5 Burbank, Burroughs share league crownBurbank, Burroughs share league crown: It was a good year for the Burbank and Burroughs high football teams.

When it came down to the final game of the regular season, the Bulldogs defeated the Indians, 28-21. That result enabled the local teams to share the Pacific League championship.

It was Burbank’s first title in 37 years and Burroughs’ second in four years.

The Indians (7-4, 7-1 in league) fell in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Southeast playoffs to Diamond Ranch — which advanced to the finals — 41-18.

For the second year in a row, the Bulldogs (9-2, 7-1) advanced to the second round of the playoffs. After defeating Alhambra, 21-14, in the first round, Burbank fell to California, 24-21.

6 Burbank High gets new football fieldBurbank High gets new football field: The school finally had its synthetic football field and running track completed in late August.

The improvement project was part of an $18-million joint venture to improve facilities at Burbank, Burroughs and Jordan Middle School. The Burbank field and all-weather track installation, which began in the spring, is estimated to have cost $4 million.

7 Bell-Jeff volleyball team makes it to CIF title contestBell-Jeff volleyball team makes it to CIF title contest: Led by sophomore outside hitter Jocelyn Cervantes, the Bellarmine-Jefferson girls’ volleyball squad made history.

The Guards (19-9) advanced to the program’s first-ever CIF Southern Section championship. Unfortunately, they fell in the Division IVA title match to No. 1-seeded Upland Christian Academy, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23.

Prior to the final, the Guards breezed through the postseason, surrendering just one game. Along with early sweeps against Duarte and Santa Clara, they only had to go to four games to beat Twentynine Palms in the quarterfinals and earned a sweep against Desert Hot Springs in the semifinals.

Bell-Jeff came into the playoffs after winning its fourth straight Santa Cruz League championship.

8 Major Softball team has fine playoff runMajor Softball team has fine playoff run: Playing against some of the finest teams in the nation, the Burbank Major Softball Little League All-Star team more than held it own in the Western Regional Tournament.

Behind solid pitching and timely hitting — with a few comebacks thrown in — the team of 11- and 12-year-olds went 4-2 in the event in Vancouver, Wash. and advanced to the event semifinals in August.

Burbank fell one run short of making it to the title game, and a chance to advance to the Little League Softball World Series. The team, however, did capture the consolation championship.

Burbank finished a historic season with a 39-2 record. The Major Softball team went farther than any squad — baseball or softball — in the eight-year history of the Burbank Little League.

Before taking part in the Western Regional Tournament, Burbank won District 16, Section 2 and Division 3 championships.

9 Burbank water polo team captures league crownBurbank water polo team captures league crown: Under the direction of Coach Carlos Pelayo, the polo group was the lone Bulldogs squad to win a league championship at the school during the winter. It was also the first title in program history.

In addition, the team went undefeated in Pacific League play, notched 20 wins, advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division IV quarterfinals and four Bulldogs players earned All-CIF honors.

10 Sanchez makes All-Star team and is tradedSanchez makes All-Star team and is traded: It was an eventful 2009 season for former Burbank High baseball standout Freddy Sanchez.

Sanchez, 32, a second baseman who participated in the All-Star Game in 2006 and 2007, was chosen to take part in his third Midsummer Classic in early July.

In late July, he was acquired by the San Francisco Giants from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor league pitcher Tim Alderson. Things did not go as planned, though, as the Giants failed to make the postseason with Sanchez sidelined for much of the remainder of the season due to injury.

In late September, Sanchez signed a two-year extension with the Giants.

Bedi slams DDCA for pitch fiasco

Bedi slams DDCA for pitch fiasco

ndiaabroad, Indo Asian News Service

New Delhi, Dec 31 (IANS) Former india Test captain and spin stalwart Bishan Singh Bedi joined forces Thursday in slamming Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) for the Kotla pitch fiasco and demanded the sack of the sports committee.

Bedi said the sports committee was the root cause of all problems.

'The sports committee was formed to look after the local leagues only, but not to take decisions on important matters. It is a superfluous committee and should be dismissed immediately. It is the root cause of all problems,' Bedi said at a press conference held jointly with former Test cricketer Kirti Azad.

Bedi said it would be a huge loss for the local cricketers and fans if Ferozeshah Kotla is banned from hosting international matches.

'I strongly feel that the person responsible must be brought to the book. Otherwise such things may happen again in future,' said the 63-year-old former left-arm spinner.

'I don't want to name anyone. There are some elements in the board who are calling the shots and harming the game. This situation should change,' he said.

'A ban would harm cricket before 2011 World Cup. Now we should look forward to improving the situation.'

Bedi said he had a meeting with DDCA president Arun Jaitley.

'I am meeting him again on January 2. He is likely to set up a cricket improvement committee, where several former cricketers would be involved.'

Asked that DDCA made similar promises when some top Delhi players, including virender Sehwag, protested against the sports committee's misrule, Bedi said: 'In this case, we should hope for the best.'

'Let us see what happens this time. I have never compromised in my life and would not do so this time also. Two things have to be eliminated from the DDCA. One is proxy voting, and then the sports committee,' he said.

Azad, who Tuesday claimed that he was insulted in DDCA's Annual General Meeting for raising serious questions, said he will continue his fight against the association. He also organised a protest rally Wednesday evening.

'We will see what comes out after Bedi's meeting with Jaitley. We will continue our stir. In the second week of January, around 10,000 people will assemble at the india Gate lawns for a protest rally against the DDCA,' Azad said.

Patriots clinch AFC East by routing Jaguars

Patriots clinch AFC East by routing Jaguars

Randy Moss caught three of Tom Brady's four touchdown passes, as the New England Patriots secured the AFC East crown with a 35-7 victory over Jacksonville at Gillette Stadium.

Brady was nearly flawless, completing 23-of-26 passes for 267 yards as New England finished with an untarnished home record this season.

The elusive Wes Welker had 138 yards on 13 receptions for the Patriots (10-5), who claimed the division title for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. Sammy Morris rushed for 95 yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown in New England's third straight win.

David Garrard threw for 185 yards on 19-of-25 efficiency and ran for Jacksonville's lone touchdown, but was intercepted twice. Maurice Jones-Drew gained 63 yards on 18 carries for the Jaguars (7-8), whose playoff hopes took a major blow.

New England got the ball to begin the game, but Laurence Maroney's fumble at the Jacksonville one-yard line spoiled a promising drive.

The Jaguars took a gamble on the subsequent drive by going for it on fourth down at their own 35. Jones-Drew, however, was wrapped up for no gain. Four plays later, Moss hauled in a two-yard touchdown for a 7-0 New England lead.

Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather picked off Garrard on the ensuing Jacksonville possession. New England quickly capitalized on the turnover when Brady and Chris Baker hooked up for a 26-yard TD on the first play of the second quarter.

A one-yard plunge by Morris and a six-yard strike from Brady to Moss gave the Patriots a commanding 28-0 lead at halftime.

Jacksonville orchestrated an eight-plus minute drive at the outset of the third quarter, but came away with no points when veteran Patriots cornerback Shawn Springs intercepted Garrard at the New England two.

Brady then guided the Patriots on a 10-play, 90-yard drive that Moss capped with a 17-yard scoring reception six seconds into the final frame.

Garrard's two-yard dash broke up the shutout bid with 12:41 remaining in the game.

Game Notes

Brady reached 4,000 yards for the third time in his career, most in Patriots history...Welker has a career-high 122 receptions this season...Moss made four grabs for 45 yards...New England defensive tackle Vince Wilfork was inactive for a second straight game because of a foot injury, while Patriots running back Fred Taylor was active after missing 10 games because of an injured ankle...Jacksonville wraps up the regular season next Sunday at Cleveland...The Patriots close out their road schedule at Houston on Sunday.

Wotherspoon clinches Olympic spot in 500 metres

Wotherspoon clinches Olympic spot in 500 metres

The announcer voice’s began to rise as the blurred red/grey streak flashed across the finish line in the first heat and the clock froze at 34.70 seconds.

“Jeremy Wotherspoon,’’ he boomed, “back on top, No. 1 ...”

No story tugs so persuasively, so insistently, at the emotional psyche as a faltering idol redeemed.

No swoon for The Spoon.

Jeremy Wotherspoon is officially back on course.

“I know after the (fall World Cup) trials, when I was struggling, there were people wondering ‘Will he snap out of it?’,” admitted the all-time winningest World Cup long-tracker, having assured himself at least the opportunity for a whiz-bang end to a decorated skating career. “But I don’t feel relieved today, no. I wasn’t anxious, panicky. I wasn’t overly stressed. Just the normal, day-to-day amount.

“It’s just nice to know I’m going back to another Olympics.”

After weeks of uncertainty, Wotherspoon cemented his place at a ‘hometown’ Winter Games, at his favourite distance, by winning the two-race 500 metres at the Canadian Olympic long-track speed skating trials in a cumulative time of 69.10 — 15/100ths of a second in front of the evergreen Mike Ireland, also set to compete in his fourth Games.

Now 33, and set to retire after this season — whether that be in the wake or Vancouver or later, following the World Cup tour — the quest of Wotherspoon to qualify for Vancouver became not only a tale of resurrection, but also of nostalgia.

“I was thinking today, this is going to be one of my last major competitions in Calgary, if not the last,” he mused. “Some training races, lesser races, but not on the same level as trials or World Cups. I’ve really enjoyed competing here through the years.

“So I wanted to focus on what I had to do in the race, but I also wanted to stay in the moment, to take it all in.”

With his Olympic aspirations on the line, the 500-metre silver medallist at Nagano 11 years ago roared out to the lead in the first leg, then held up well enough to finish just 1/10th of a second behind Ireland in Round 2 and nail down the title in style.

“The start didn’t go well in either race,” Wotherspoon griped softly. “I think I have a couple of reasons why but I’ll have to look at the video.

“I don’t think I got into the ice, didn’t get the push, I wanted to.

“The good thing is that there’s things I can identify to work on to improve, to get faster. There’s a lot more I can see getting out of myself.”

Oh, there was always the chance to qualify in the 1,000, of course, but the 500 and Jeremy Wotherspoon are synonymous; they just, well, go together, like Larry Bird and a jumper from the corner of the parquet, or Nolan Ryan and a belt-high 3-2 fastball to work out of a jam. The Red Deer Rocket still holds the world record in the distance, at 34.03, set what seems a lifetime ago, Nov. 7, 2007, at Salt Lake.

Kyle Parrott of Manitoba and Edmonton’s Jamie Gregg rounded out the men’s top four, and both could also be B.C.-bound. The Olympic long-track team — including as many as 10 women and eight men — will be officially announced Jan. 4.

The women’s 500 trials, meanwhile, offered up some surprises Sunday. The winner, Christine Nesbitt, in a combined 77.10, could hardly be termed an eyebrow-raiser, but the runner-up, 20-year-old Calgarian Anastasia Bucsis, certainly elicited a few gasps.

“I brought Anastasia along with me,” Nesbitt said, protege in tow, reaching the interview area. “She’s going to need the practice.”

Only a couple months ago, Bucsis shocked everyone, herself included, by making the World Cup team. And now, in short order, she’s off to Vancouver to compete in her first Olympic Games. Quite the little social climber.

“I honestly don’t know how I feel, yet,” she admitted. “I’m in shock. Complete shock. I’m ecstatic. I just finished crying with my mom. If you’d asked me six months ago if this could happen, I’d have laughed and rolled my eyes.

“It’s not the fastest I’ve skated, but under the circumstances, with the extra pressure, I’d say they were two of the best races.

“I’m on Cloud 9.”

Nesbitt, the prohibitive favourite in the women’s 1,000 as the Games near, actually seemed prouder of Bucsis’s afternoon than her own.

“We need to work on our 500 so to see her and Tamara (both make it) is really exciting.”

Winnipeg’s Shannon Rempel placed third with an accumulative 77.70 and St. Albert, Alta.’s Tamara Oudenaarden fourth in 77.77.

With all due respect to the startling Bucsis and the rest the ladies, however, the skater of the moment, as he has been so often in the past dozen or so years, turned out to be the Wotherspoon.

He may have seemed nonplussed by how far he’d travelled since the fall World Cup trials, since the whispering and wondering had begun to catch fire, but his training partners were overjoyed for the acknowledged leader of the group, slapping him on the back in congratulation.

“A four-time Olympian ... but the first time in my home country. The athletes I’ve talked to say it’ll be the experience of a lifetime. Whether it’ll be the experience of my lifetime, I can’t say. It’s not like there’s a pattern or a formula involved.”

Whatever awaits the now four-time Olympian in Richmond, B.C., five weeks from now, in the glare of the world’s gaze, is anyone’s guess.

Rollin' In A 5.0, Once Again

Rollin' In A 5.0, Once Again: 2011 Ford Mustang GT Gets 412 HP

Capping what just might just be one of the worst-kept auto-industry secret of the decade—but a very exciting one nonetheless—today we're officially bringing you more details on the 2010 Ford Mustang GT.

And yes, the recent leaks and rumors have been right: The 2010 Mustang GT packs a new 5.0-liter V-8 good for 412 horsepower. Almost as significant to budget-minded buyers today is that the new Mustang GT will achieve a projected 25 mpg on the highway.

That '5.0' badge alone is likely to bring back waves of nostalgia for anyone aged 30 to 60, as it represents a time when the Mustang was slowly crawling out of an emissions-regulation-induced coma that lasted through the '70s and into the '80s. By the mid-to-late '80s, the Mustang GT, with its stout 225-horse 5.0, was arguably the king of the pony cars and faster than many sports cars costing much more.

Now, 20 years later, the new 5.0 is poised to make nearly double that. With 412 hp and 390 pound-feet, the new engine is a radical evolution of the 4.6-liter overhead-cam V-8 that's been a Mustang GT staple since 1996. Not quite a clean-slate engine but a thorough rethink and redesign in nearly every way, the engine is, as ford product development chief put it in a release, "the next chapter in the development of the world-class Mustang powertrain portfolio."

The engine, which carried the nickname Coyote through development, was inspired by the 1960s-era Coyote Indy racing engine, also a double overhead cam V-8. ford brought the new engine to production in record time thanks to computer-aided modeling and advanced machine work.

With variable valve timing, the new V-8 gets ford's Ti-VCT system, using cam torque and engine oil pressure to properly actuate the valves, while the oil system has been improved in several ways—with a greater (and baffled) sump capacity, piston-cooling jets, and design changes for reduced frothing at high revs. Redline has been pushed to 7,000 rpm, and the all-aluminum cylinder heads get four valves per cylinder, and the new aluminum block was developed with track-day crankcase pressures in mind.

On the exhaust side, the new engine gets tubular headers that, according to marketing chief Jim Farley, mean that aftermarket headers won't be the first stop after the dealership for Mustang GT buyers.

The new Mustang GT is only slightly heavier than the previous 4.6-liter Mustang, and the new 5.0-liter engine weighs just 430 pounds—20 percent less than the previous 5.0.

Fuel economy with the new engine, as we mentioned above, should be slightly improved overall, ford promises, versus the outgoing 4.6-liter V-8, despite the increase in displacement and power. With the six-speed automatic transmission, the new Mustang will be rated at 17 mpg city, 25 highway (2 mpg higher on the highway that the 2010 GT automatic), and with the six-speed manual EPA ratings will stand at 16/24 (technically the same as 2010).

To match the higher output of the engine, the new Mustang GT will get larger brakes, plus stiffer rear suspension settings. A Brembo brake package will be optional, incorporating the larger rotors (14-inch discs in front) and calipers used in the Shelby GT500 Mustang, plus 19-inch alloys and summer performance tires. The 2011 Mustang GT also gets the Electric Power Steering System (EPAS), which ford is in the process of phasing in through its entire lineup.

In addition to those prominent fender badges declaring it's a '5.0,' the new GT will get a higher 160-mph speedometer and three new colors: Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat, Race Red, and Ingot Silver.

ford also promises various improvements both to overall noise and vibration control, and the convertible will get a stiffer body structure thanks to improved bracing.

Although ford hasn't yet detailed feature changes, the 2010 Ford Mustang GT will offer a wide range of features, including integrated blind spot mirrors, a universal garage-door opener, and ford's MyKey programmable vehicle key system.
