Speedskating World cup, Shani Davis snags record.
CALGARY (AP) — American star Shani Davis set the track record in winning the men's 1,000 meters on Sunday at the World Cup, while Canadian speedskater Christine Nesbitt won a pair of gold medals and helped set a world record.
Davis finished in 1 minute, 6.91 seconds at the Olympic Oval, well ahead of Lee Kyou-Hyuk of South Korea in 1:07.61. Denny Morrison of Canada was third in 1:07.77.
Nesbitt won the women's 1,000-meter race in 1:14.03, then teamed with Kristina Groves and Brittany Schussler to set the world record in the team pursuit.
Their time of 2:55.79 was 25-hundreds faster than the mark that Daniela Anschutz Thoms, Annie Friesinger-Postma and Claudia Pechstein set in 2005.
"It's wow, but at the same time it's something that last year we were doing well in the team pursuit, especially toward the end of the season," Nesbitt said. "It's something we all knew we could do and it was just a matter of putting the race together and doing it. We know we didn't have a perfect race, even in that, so it's really cool."
Annette Gerritsen of the Netherlands was second in the women's 1,000 in 1:14.48, and Monique Angermueller of Germany third in 1:14.68. The top American was Jennifer Rodriguez in seventh.
Japan was second in women's pursuit in 2:59.79, while Germany took bronze in 3:00.25.
The Netherlands won the men's pursuit in 3:38.05. Canada took the silver in 3:39.17 and Norway was third in 3:41.59.
