China Sand Sculpture Art City has been built in the Kumtaq Desert in Shanshan Couthy of Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The "City" was reopened to the public recently after large-scale reparation and renovation. The site is an AAA-grade (see AAAAA sites) national place of interest known as "a desert amongst the city" and covers 320 mu (about 213,440 square meters). Nearly 50 large sand sculpture works here always catch the eyes of many tourists. If those tourists are tired, they do be able to feel the sand therapy that can heal numerous diseases.
FYI: Kumtaq Desert (Kumtag means "sand hill" in Ugyur), is China's eighth largest desert, covering a total area of 22,917.2 square kilometers. It is located between Lop Nur in Xinjiang Ugyur Autonomous Region and Dunhuang of Gansu Province and sandwiched between two mountain ranges: the Tianshan Mountains on the north and Altun Mountains on the south. The Kumtaq has the toughest natural conditions in northwest China's arid region.
