Ice Hockey gold for Canada

Canada's women have won the ice hockey gold medal in Vancouver, the first half of what the host nation hopes will be an Olympic double.

They beat the USA 2-0 at Canada Hockey Place, with Marie-Philip Poulin scoring twice in the first period.

From then on in, Canada never looked in danger of surrendering their lead and there were jubilant scenes at the end as the country celebrated its eighth gold of the Games.

Canada's men's team are in semi-final action on Friday.

Making the success all the sweeter was the fact that the USA had beaten Canada in the last two World Championship finals.

Bama LB McClain announces he'll enter NFL draft

Alabama All-American linebacker Rolando McClain says he is skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

McClain made the announcement Monday at a news conference in Tuscaloosa. An defensive anchor for the national champion Crimson Tide, McClain is projected as a first-round pick.

He led Alabama with 105 tackles and 14.5 stops for losses. He also had two interceptions and two sacks.
Alabama beat Texas last week to claim its first national title since 1992.

Spain beats Australia, into Hopman Cup final

The United States beat Romania 3-0 in the Hopman Cup on Thursday, while Spain secured a place in the final with a sweep of Australia.

Melanie Oudin beat Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-3 while Romania forfeited the the men’s singles and mixed doubles because of a groin injury suffered by Victor Hanescu in an earlier match. The U.S. had already been eliminated from reaching the finals.

Australia needed to win each of Thursday’s matches in straight sets to have a chance of reaching Saturday’s championship, but its hopes ended when Samantha Stosur was beaten 6-4, 6-1 by Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
