VANCOUVER — Russia's Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin altered their controversial "aboriginal" costumes, but teams from Canada and the USA made the changes that counted Sunday when they surged to the top of the standings in Olympic ice dancing.
With flag-waving home fans cheering their Spanish flamenco, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada won the original dance with a score of 68.41. Their 111.15 total put them first overall. "We feel like all of Canada is on the ice with us," said Virtue.
Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the USA, who skated to a folk dance theme from India, were second in the original dance (67.08) and second overall (108.55). "We gave everything we had in the program," said White, who has teamed with Davis to win the past two U.S. titles.
