The giant portrait of our late Chairman Mao Zedong that hangs over the Forbidden City was defaced by a vandal, prompting police to clear the area and adjacent Tiananmen Square. Most of the picture was still intact, but the lower left area of the huge portrait appeared damaged by soot.
An unemployed man named Gu Haiou, 35 years old, from Urumqi, capital of the far-northwestern region of Xinjiang, was detained, as he was suspected to commit throwing a fire to the portrait.
